Timelines

Successful admission to healthcare graduate programs requires long-term planning rather than last-minute application preparation. While application services typically open approximately one year before matriculation, competitive applicants often spend several years building the experiences, skills, and professional networking needed for a successful application. The general application timeline here provides a framework that can be adapted for any healthcare program. More specific program timelines can be found in the sections below.

Keep in mind, there are multiple pathways into healthcare and there isn’t one “right” timeline. Throughout the tables below, you will see references to “No Gap Pathway”and “With Gap Pathway.” These refer to when you plan to start a graduate healthcare program in relation to when you receive your undergraduate degree.

No Gap Pathway: If you plan to start a healthcare program immediately after graduating from RPI, follow the No Gap Pathway recommendations. Because most healthcare applications are submitted approximately one year before matriculation, you will typically apply during the spring semester of your junior year at RPI or the summer before your senior year.

With Gap Pathway: If you plan to spend one or more years after graduating from RPI exploring other experiences before starting a healthcare program, follow the With Gap Pathway recommendations. During your gap experiences, you might work in healthcare, conduct research, pursue service opportunities, complete additional coursework, obtain a master’s degree, earn certifications, or strengthen other aspects of your application. Many successful applicants choose this pathway, and it can provide valuable opportunities for personal, professional, and academic growth before beginning a healthcare program.
