Combining foundational education and innovative research to advance science and shape the world.

Housed at the nation’s first technological university – and of the world’s most renowned – the RPI School of Science features 13 undergraduate majors and 19 distinct graduate programs as well as a daring and collaborative research enterprise.

Fueled by engaged faculty and high-powered researchers, we provide foundational scientific education alongside rich and diverse opportunities for our students to learn by doing – The Rensselaer Distinction, a philosophy born two centuries ago when our earliest students conducted experiments on the banks of the Hudson River. Our students enter research labs early in their academic careers to probe mysteries of the world, develop fundamental skills, and grow as inquisitive, critical thinkers prepared to positively impact the world.

We pursue curiosity-driven investigations around some of humanity’s most compelling questions, ever eager to translate our work into real-world contexts. Moving seamlessly across disciplinary boundaries, we study problems with global relevance as well as issues demanding further exploration – from biomanufacturing to biological neuroscience, from the dynamics of galaxies to the circadian rhythms of life, from artificial intelligence to quantum computing and much more.

Here at the RPI School of Science, we explore, we discover, and we invent. We address the questions of tomorrow by doing the science of today.
