The Department of Computer Science is pleased to have welcomed Alex Gittens as a new Assistant Professor in the Department.  Professor Gittens earned his B.S. in Electrical Engineering as well as in Mathematics at the University of Houston and his Ph.D. in Applied and Computational Mathematics at the California Institute of Technology.  After earning his Ph.D., Professor Gittens held a positions as a Research Scientist at eBay Research Laboratory as well as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the International Computer Science Institute and Department of Statistics at UC Berkeley.  His research focuses on understanding and exploiting the trade-off between computational effort and accuracy in linear algebra and applied statistical machine learning problems as well as designing efficient and principled linear and nonlinear dimensionality reduction techniques for machine learning problems.
