Contests & Competitions
Putnam Competition
Widely regarded as the most prestigious pure mathematics competition in North America, the William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition, is an annual contest established in 1938 in memory of its namesake. The competition is designed to test originality as well as technical competence and in 2014 RPI undergraduate mathematics students placed third out of more than 430 teams.
Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM)
An international contest for high school students and college undergraduates. It challenges teams of students to clarify, analyze, and propose solutions to open-ended problems. The contest attracts diverse students and faculty advisors from over 900 institutions around the world.
Problem Solving Math Club
The Mathematics Problem Solving Club at Rensselaer meets weekly to work on challenging mathematical problems. The club is focused on working and discussing problems such as those found on math competions as well as other interesting problems suggested by students and faculty.
We would like to invite students of all majors to join the Mathematical Sciences Problem Solving Math Club.
The club meets Tuesdays from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. in Amos Eaton 402. All students are invited to join us.
Many students in the Mathematics Problem Solving Club also participate in the Putnam Mathematical Competition.
Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM)
The purpose of the Association for Women in Mathematics is to create a community in which women and girls can thrive in their mathematical endeavors, and to promote equitable opportunity and treatment of women and others of marginalized genders and gender identities across the mathematical sciences.
