The Department of Mathematical Sciences is pleased to welcome Yangyang Xu as a new Assistant Professor in the department.  Professor Xu earned his B.S. in Computational Mathematics at Nanjing University, China, and his M.S. in Operations Research at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, before earning his Ph.D. in Computational and Applied Mathematics at Rice University.  After earning his Ph.D., Professor Xu held one-year postdoctoral appointments at the University of Waterloo, Canada, and the University of Minnesota.  Immediately before joining Rensselaer, Professor Xu, was an Assistant Professor at the University of Alabama.  Professor Xu's research focuses on the design of efficient and reliable numerical approaches for the solution of optimization problems with applications arising in various areas of data science, including statistical and machine learning, data mining, signal/image/video processing, neuroscience, engineering and finance.  Professor Xu has already authored numereous papers in high-quality journals, given many talks at national and international conferences, and has recently received external funding for his research from the National Science Foundation.
