Science Research

Research plays an integral role in our vision of the technological university.

At the beginning of the second decade of the 21st century, science and technology are being used to address challenges of unprecedented complexity and scope.

The universities of today are charged with a fundamental role in this process—to create the next great innovations, and to educate the next generation of innovators who can address today’s and tomorrow’s most critical challenges. Solutions to scientific and societal challenges begin with insight and discovery, and Rensselaer researchers are leaders in this landscape.

In recent years, we’ve invested top dollar, time, and talent in our many research centers and facilities. Students will work in one or more of these centers with prestigious professors doing real research and projects.

These centers engage graduate and undergraduate students alike in leading-edge research activities, and complement the programs offered through the departments within the School.

Visions of Science

(The Approach Blog) The School of Science recently posted a gallery of images from their Research Photo Contest.

These are photos that chronicle the work of researchers within the School of Science at Rensselaer, and they run the gamut from a glorious shot of twilight on an Adirondack lake—taken in the course of work through the Rensselaer Darrin Fresh Water Institute, to “the Arginine magic”—an image produced from molecular dynamics simulation to help develop a model for how drugs are moved through mammalian cells.

Department Research:
Research Constellations

Constellations are multidisciplinary teams of senior faculty, early career faculty, and graduate and undergraduate students.

The constellation faculty comprise three or more outstanding stars in a particular research field. They build upon existing core strengths in microelectronics and microsystems, advanced materials, nanotechnology, and advanced scientific computation, modeling, and simulation.

Supported by NASA, the Center is devoted to investigating the origins of life on Earth and the conditions that lead to formation of habitable planets in our own and other solar systems. Website Researchers are working to develop the next generation of solar technology by studying one of the most powerful energy converting machines in the world—plants. Article The DFWI operates a state-of-the-art field station, situated on the crystalline Lake George at the foot of the Adirondack Mountains. The DFWI is widely regarded for its all-encompassing study of freshwaters. Website
