EES Undergraduates at Sea

Five undergraduate students from the Dept. of Earth and Environmental Sciences took to the high seas this summer on marine research cruises.

Brianna King, William Skorski, Tessa McGee, and Elise Wilbourn (right) sailed on the academic research vessel Endeavor in mid-May to assist Dr. Joan Bernhard of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution to collect marine sediments and foraminifera (shelled marine protists). They worked very long, very hard days while at sea, and enjoyed it immensely!

Two have graduated from RPI and gone on in ocean research fields.

Tessa was the 2013 Rosenholz Award recipient, and is now a PhD student in Oceanography at the Univ. of Washington.

Brianna was the 2013 LaFleur Award recipient, and is now a lab assistant in paleoceanography/paleoclimatology research at Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory; she plans to attend graduate school in marine biology next year.

Jon van Deusen sailed on the academic research vessel Atlantis II this summer from Woods Hole MA to Astoria OR, via the Panama Canal. While onboard, Jon assisted on the Bridge, in the engine room, and in maintenance of the deep sea research submersible Alvin.

Jon is in the NROTC, and also participated in training operations at sea on a Navy attack submarine this summer. This was not his first experience on a sub – last summer, Jon received training onboard a Navy guided missile destroyer and a ballistic missile submarine.
