Here is a resource guide that you can use to assist you when advising students. In this guide you will learn about what your responsibilities are when it comes to advising students and how the Science HUB can assist you and your students. If you have further questions, please email the Science HUB at sciencehub@rpi.edu.
The School of Science offers two types of advising: the Advising Hub and Faculty Advisors. The Advising Hub provides general support on course planning, policies, major/minor changes, and resources, with flexible in-person or virtual appointments and walk-in hours. Faculty Advisors, assigned at matriculation, guide students with major-specific expertise, career/graduate school advice, and research opportunities from freshman year through graduation. For more information, please click here.
Pre-Health Advising at Rensselaer is available to any prospective, accepted, or current student, as well as alumni, across all majors and RPI Schools. Advising primarily focuses on those who are planning on attending medical school (M.D., MD/PhD, and D.O.), but advising is also available for those interested in physician assistant programs (P.A.), pharmacy programs (PharmD), dentistry programs (D.D.S. and D.M.D.) and optometry programs (O.D.). Students can make an appt with an advisor here and you can find more information on our Pre-Health advising program here.

RPI’s transfer credit policy allows students to transfer up to 32 credits. This includes AP/IB/A-level credits as well as courses at other colleges and universities (including Study Abroad). Courses must be taken at accredited institutions, registered directly, and passed with at least a C-. Only 8 transfer/AP credits may count toward the HASS core, and only 8 may count towards the Math/Science core without permission. Additional approvals are required in specific circumstances (see the Transfer Credit Approval Form here). Students must follow the transfer credit approval process outlined on the form, which includes submitting course details and approval forms to the appropriate RPI School before enrolling, and then sending official transcripts to the Registrar’s office after completion. AP/IB credit limits vary by catalog year, with recent years allowing up to 32 AP credits. Please visit here for more details on the transfer credit process.
Undergraduate students applying for graduation at RPI must first check deadlines on the Academic Calendar (typically within the 1st month of the term) and ensure they are registered for courses in their intended graduation semester. They need to resolve incomplete or missing grades, verify all Institute and departmental degree requirements through Degree Works and their advisor, and apply for graduation in SIS while confirming their major/minor, diploma name, mailing address, and contact information. Students must also clear any holds, complete loan exit interviews if applicable, and submit official transcripts for any transfer or consortium coursework by the deadline. For more information, please visit here.
